SUNSET YOGURTis the magic moment in which white hot glass takes the consistency of Yogurt and the colour of Sunset.
SUNSET YOGURT is the brand from Cosima Montavoci, Venetian contemporary artist, jewelry maker and designer.
SUNSET YOGURT was founded in 2016, even though Cosima started her journey with glass in 2005, in Murano, Venice.
Since then her love and bond with the glass craftsmanship exponentially grew during the years, leading her to open her own atelier and workshop in Venice, Italy since 2006 at the age of 18.
Cosima then moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2009 and graduated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Fine Arts in 2015.
In 2018,SUNSET YOGURT moved back to Venice and in 2022 opened the new Atelier in Murano.
"I've always tried to do something different with glass, but I've always found it a little tight. I, therefore, started to create ornaments that treated the same themes as my sculptures. The most authentic Memoriabilia I could think of, bringing the concept of my research outside of Galleries and artspaces in the streets, on people, although with a different function.
This is how Thingness Collection was born, characterized by body ornaments representing anatomical parts such as teeth, boobies, eyes and other body parts handmade in glass.
If in my sculptures, material and decontextualization made these body parts more acceptable, in the Thingness collection, it is definitely that touch of humor that breaks the taboo. Humour is used as a tool of acceptance."
From there on a lot has happened... here are a few examples:
Family Jewels collection was inspired by some unrightfully angry reactions towards the Boobies, If with the Thingness collection the aim was to use humor as a tool of acceptance towards our being things and seeing our body parts as objectified, even though charged with strong symbologies, with the Family Jewels collection a playful vibe, vibrant pastel colors and a naive atmosphere, definitely far from vulgarity, uses humor and deception as a way to smash the taboo.
We live in an Era where we flaunt to be equal and free, but where at the same time mechanisms similar to before the sexual revolution of the 60s are still in auge.
Pills (Andrà tutto bene \ Everything will be fine) is a collection that deals with the tabù of mental issues.
The line between who is 'normal' and who isn't is always less defined. Nowadays with stress as an everyday meal, we are facing how fragile the human psyche can be. Although there are severe diagnosed pathologies, it is always more common to develop a 'the tendency to...' or 'isolated episodes of...'.
'Andrà tutto bene \ Everything will be fine' is used ironically in the title as it is often said when everything is in fact not going ok, and was often used in a moment in time which made us all feel fragile and a bit flipped.
The Murano Glass pills and medicines are used to adorn the head and body, they take inspiration from renowned calming medicines, painkillers, and more...
With this collection, I want to raise the issue of mental issues and make it something that we can talk about together. But we're all a bit weird and we are not alone.
Humor will save us!
Glass has a wonderful history that is worth praising, but it's a material with so many more possibilities.Murano glass is not dead!
